Black Culture and Therapy

April 20, 2020

There is a negative stigma around mental health and therapy in the Black community. Cultural norms reinforce behaviors like hiding pain and dealing with problems on your own.

Seeking help from a mental health professional may be seen as weak or simply not for the Black community. This perception has caused many people to struggle by themselves. Over 7 million Black Americans were diagnosed with a mental illness in 2019 alone.

Therapy can help you process your feelings, build positive behaviors, and ultimately live the life you want with a healthy mind. It can help you identify patterns and build skills to change them in a way that will benefit and enrich your life. Therapy is temporary and the tools you gain from it will last forever. It's also becoming widely accepted in the Black community (here are 10 Black celebrities who swear by therapy.)

Seeking help is one of the strongest things you can do for yourself, it's a way to take care of yourself and the people you love.
